Why Is It in News?

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal launched the National Strategic Trade Command Centre (NSTCC) at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, on 15 October 2026. The initiative aims to improve evidence-based trade decisions, strengthen trade monitoring and support the identification of export opportunities.

About

The National Strategic Trade Command Centre (NSTCC) is an initiative of the Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

It is designed to strengthen India’s ability to analyse international trade data, monitor trade developments and support strategic decisions related to exports and global markets.

Key functions include:

  1. Trade intelligence: Analysing trade-related information to support government decision-making.
  2. Product-wise and market-wise analysis: Identifying potential export products and destination markets.
  3. Export opportunity identification: Helping policymakers and exporters understand areas of demand and potential growth.
  4. Data-driven policy support: Using trade data and evidence to guide strategic planning.
  5. Monitoring strategic trade controls: Supporting the review of the SCOMET dashboard and related applications.

SCOMET stands for Special Chemicals, Organisms, Materials, Equipment and Technologies. It refers to controlled items that may have dual-use applications and are subject to export-control requirements.

At the launch, the Commerce Minister emphasised the importance of expediting pending SCOMET applications and called for regular meetings of the Inter-Ministerial Committee, including weekly meetings if required.

The centre is intended to improve the quality and timeliness of trade-related decisions and strengthen India’s positioning in global markets.
