Question 1
India Proposes BS-VII Emission Norms from April 2029
By Rakesh Kushwaha, Lead Tech & Exam Analyst
India has proposed introducing Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII) emission standards from April 2029, beginning with passenger vehicles. The draft framework expands environmental requirements beyond exhaust emissions to include real-world testing, brake and tyre particles, electric-vehicle battery durability and vehicle environmental information.
Why Is It in News?
In October 2026, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed a phased introduction of Bharat Stage VII emission standards, starting on 1 April 2029 for passenger vehicles. The proposal is in the draft stage and provides for a phased rollout extending to 2035.
About
Bharat Stage (BS) emission standards are Indian regulatory standards that set limits on pollutants emitted by motor vehicles. They are intended to reduce air pollution and improve vehicle environmental performance.
India currently follows BS-VI standards, implemented nationwide from April 2020. The proposed BS-VII framework would broaden pollution control and monitoring requirements.
Key features of the proposal include:
- Stricter emission monitoring: Greater emphasis on emissions under real-world driving conditions, in addition to laboratory tests.
- On-board monitoring: Systems to monitor and report vehicle emissions.
- Brake and tyre pollution: Regulation of particulate pollution arising from brake wear and tyre abrasion in later phases.
- Electric-vehicle battery durability: Minimum battery-performance requirements for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
- Environmental Vehicle Passport: Vehicle information covering areas such as emissions, fuel or energy consumption and battery health.
- Phased implementation: The proposed roadmap includes stages beginning in April 2029, April 2031 and April 2035.
The framework is intended to address both conventional exhaust pollution and additional environmental impacts during vehicle use.
As these provisions were proposed through a draft notification, the proposed dates and requirements should not be described as fully implemented or finalised regulations.
Key Points
- Proposed standard: Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII).
- Relevant ministry: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
- Proposed initial implementation: 1 April 2029.
- Initial vehicle category: Passenger vehicles, including cars and SUVs.
- Existing nationwide standard: BS-VI, implemented in April 2020.
- Proposed rollout phases: April 2029, April 2031 and April 2035.
- New areas of attention: Real-world emissions, brake particles, tyre abrasion and EV battery durability.
- Proposed vehicle information system: Environmental Vehicle Passport.
- Main objective: Reduce vehicular pollution and improve environmental performance.
- Important distinction: BS-VII is a proposed framework in the reported draft, not a fully implemented standard.
